The Night I Met the Love of My Life

The Night I Met the Love of My Life

I'm here to tell you guys about how I met the love of my life. For context, I'm an only child, and as a child, my mom didn't want me to be lonely. And trust me after that night, I was never lonely.

It's Christmas day 2008, and 6 years old me is swaying in the back of my mom's car. She told me we were going out, but didn't specify where, and of course, as a child, I went along with it, didn't question anything. We drove for a long time, until we reached an old house. When the front door opened, an old lady stood in the doorframe, surrounded by a bunch of tiny, sweet little puppies. I was instantly in love.

I froze there, too shy to go toward them, until my mom nudged me a bit, encouraging me to play with the puppies. I sat on the floor and started to play with the most beautiful and energetic puppy ever, she had the fluffiest fur and the most adorable face. Her brother and sister stood to the side, the sister particularly didn't seem to like me much, she wouldn't come near me at all. After what felt like hours, I decided that she was the puppy I wanted. I ran up to my mom, and insisted we take her home.

Little did I know, my mom had other plans. She had chosen her sister. I fought and threw a tantrum, “She doesn't even like me! She didn't want to play with me!” But my attempts were ignored, and we left with the sister.

On our way back, I refused to talk, angry that I didn't get the puppy I wanted. In an attempt to make me warm up to our latest family addition, my mom told me that I could name her. I looked over at the shaking puppy sitting next to me, and realized how scared she must have been. Two humans basically just kidnapped her, away from her siblings and everything she had ever known. That made me ease up a bit. “Cutie” I said, “Her name is Cutie!”

It was late when we arrived back home, way past my bedtime. As I tried to fall asleep, I heard scratching noises. I looked out and saw Cutie looking at me, begging not to sleep on the floor. I was slightly annoyed still, she wasn't the puppy I wanted after all, but still I reached out and grabbed her and put her on the bed next to me. The same thing happened the night after that and many nights after that, until she grew enough to be able to jump on the bed by herself. And that's where she slept for the next 14 years of our lives.

Cutie is the first love of my life, my sister and the best puppy a girl could ever ask for. She was there for me during my best times and my low points. She celebrated with me all my big life milestones. She saw me make friends, loose some of them, she saw me graduate from high school, and she saw me move out. She was my best friend and I miss her everyday. I never understood why my mom chose her, but I am extremely grateful she did. And to think I ever wanted another puppy.
