Hey guys! Summer is coming up, the weather has recently unfolded itself majestically from cold, chilly, and windy to bright, sunny, and warm. As Olaf from Frozen sings it, “just imagine how much cooler I’ll be in summer!”. The summer also welcomes abundant activities that we can do. So if you are looking for some inspiration, check out these tips.
In the Netherlands, we are blessed with a lot of parks in the neighbourhood. So take advantage of those, lie at a nearby park and get that tan healthy look. For example, Vroesenpark, which is located just northward of Rotterdam Zoo (Diergaarde Blijdorp), is a great place to unwind. There are many Rotterdammers who mingle at this park during summer nights, have BBQ parties and just chill.
Are you great at keeping balance? Do you like ice-skating during the winter? Then you must love rollerblading as well! Or if you already have a pair of rollerblades, it’s time to improve your rollerblading skills! Rotterdam has Wednesday Night Skate during six Wednesday evenings in July and August, where all rollerbladers are invited to join !for free! for a 12.5 km ride through Rotterdam. How wonderful is that?! For amateurs, don’t forget to wear a full-gear protection for safety. You can find out more here.
Sketching a Building
I have tried this myself, sketching the iconic Erasmus bridge while sitting on the grass in front of the Boompjes. It is so relaxing, as it helps you unwind and just lets you focus on your surroundings as well as absorb it. Especially Rotterdam is full of interesting architecture. Some ideas for sketching: the Cube houses, The Rotterdam, the Market Hall, and Kinderdijk.
For those of you who crave for more adrenaline, you can try mountain biking. In the Netherlands, you can find rentals for mountain bikes and do it at a town called Bergschenhoek, which you can reach in 35 minutes biking from University. In this area, there is Outdoor Valley, the organization that offers much more other outdoor activities as well, such as archery, canoeing, climbing, etc. You can find other route options in the Netherlands here.
So what are you waiting for? Grab your picnic carpet, rollerblade shoes, sketch book, and guts, and go outside enjoy the sun while it lasts!
