Binge #7: Sense8

As one of my fellow Media students said: ‘Sense8 gives love a new definition’. I couldn’t describe this show in a better way than he did. For a fact, whenever people ask me ‘What is this Sense8 about?’, I respond with that same answer. To stay in the theme of Pride Month, I thought: why not pick the show that has diversity written all over it?

Before I start aggressively obsessing over this series, you guys need to know what Sense8 is about. Every single person I know had multiple ‘What the fudge?’ moments while watching the pilot episode. That’s why you need to remember that the characters are going through the exact same thing as you are. Their minds are messed up and ‘What the fudge?’ is not enough to express that feeling. However, to keep it simple, Sense8 is about eight completely different, unrelated people that are being reborn into a cluster. Piece of cake, nah?

The point is that they can feel what the others are feeling. They can see what their cluster is seeing. Each and every one of them is able to experience the other ones’ lives, even if one is being abducted in Kenya, while the other visits Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Can you imagine? Hearing and seeing the rain while it’s actually dry and sunny outside? Feeling sexually aroused for no reason? You might go crazy, but it’s just your cluster experiencing this, somewhere on the other side of the world.

I hope you’re realizing Sense8 actually films in these 8 cities, and many other locations. All the cast members come from different cultural backgrounds, have a different skin color, and a different set of eyes. But that’s not what it’s about. It is about them as individuals or one individual, if you get what I mean. It is about them as a person; as a human being that is loving, passionate, and powerful on its own. The characters are brought alive so delicately and the actors are, one by one, beautiful – inside and out.

Enjoy the fudge out of this Netflix Original series with two spectacular seasons, and let Capheus give you the courage that you need. Let Nomi empower you to always keep on fighting. Let Lito guide you to the person you are. Let Kala give you wisdom on how to love yourself. Let Sun bring you strength in times of crisis. Let Wolfgang teach you how to stand up for yourself. Let Will lead you to become a better person, and let Riley make you scream on the top of your lungs
